Inspect the shape of a plate number, then use an official service to check the actual vehicle. This is not registration, ownership, stolen-vehicle or accident-history verification.

For standard car plates, NZTA allows up to six alphanumeric characters. Other classes and historical plates can differ.
Examples describe common formats rather than an exhaustive legal register. Nonstandard formats must be reviewed by the relevant authority. A matching format is never evidence of a valid record.
